Jehovah Jireh

“Thy lovingkindness, O Jehovah, is in the heavens; Thy faithfulness reacheth unto the skies. Thy righteousness is like the mountains of God; Thy judgments are a great deep: O Jehovah, thou preservest man and beast.  How precious is thy lovingkindness, O God! And the children of men take refuge under the shadow of thy wings.”  Psalm 36:5-7

The world says be overwhelmed. The world says give up. The word says there is nothing that can save you. The world says one more drink, one more pill, one more excuse, and one more thrill. In the end, you feel all the more empty. You feel a void that nothing seems to fill. What does one do when the message is hopeless, the message is bleak, or when the repeating message is give up?

Flip the Script

To respond in the right way, one needs to change the message to which they are listening. The world has offered trouble and terror. Those liars have offered poisonous error. Yet the God of the Universe, the Creator of the heavens and earth, cares for you, even you! David knew this so well as he penned the words of Psalm 36. He had seen how God had lifted him up from his lowly status as a shepherd boy. He had seen how God had delivered his life from the hands of a lion, a bear, and even the mighty King Saul. His only experience was that God provides!

Our God Provides

What is your experience with God? Have you missed a meal? Maybe you have but, have you starved to death? No, if you are reading this, you have not. Little things like this are overlooked when the struggle becomes so real in our lives. Our eyes become blind to how much God is already doing. That is who He is. Our God is a provider.

In the Old Testament, our father in the faith, Abraham, was commanded to offer his son of promise Isaac; at the last minute, he was stopped, and the Lord provided a ram in the thicket and Abraham named that spot Jehovah Jireh which means God provides (cf. Gen 22:10-14). This is the character of God. He provides all. He does so even when it seems like he will not. The Hebrew writer recounted this, “By faith, Abraham, being tried, offered up Isaac: yea, he that had gladly received the promises was offering up his only begotten son; even he to whom it was said, In Isaac shall thy seed be called: accounting that God is able to raise up, even from the dead; from whence he did also in a figure receive him back” Hebrews 11:17-19. Abraham trusted God to provide even when it meant believing that He would do what had never been done before, raising a dead man to life.

He Provides Only What He Can

This is exactly how Jehovah provided when He sent His son to live, but ultimately to die for our sins, and yet be raised again. Who can provide like Jehovah? He provides lovingkindness, faithfulness, righteousness, justice, preservation, and refuge for those who will faithfully seek Him. Only He can provide what He can. As men, we need to stop looking throughout the world for something only God can give. Trust God and obey him. Take refuge in Him. For He is the God who provides.

Grace and Peace,

Don't Raise an Ahaz

Twenty years old was Ahaz when he began to reign; and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: and he did not that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah his God, like David his father. But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the nations, whom Jehovah cast out from before the children of Israel.   And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree . 2 Kings 16:2-4                   When was the first time you drove a car? What about the first time you jumped off a diving board or gave a speech? After that first time, it certainly became easier. What about the first lie you told? Did it become easier? King Ahaz of Judah was evil and far from the example of David. Ahaz was the first to offer child sacrifices to t...

Jehoiakim and Enemies

“Surely at the commandment of Jehovah came this upon Judah, to remove them out of his sight, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did, and also for the innocent blood that he shed; for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood: and Jehovah would not pardon.”  2 Kings 24:3-4 Jehoiakim king of Judah was the son of Jehoahaz who chose to do evil and die in Egypt a slave of Pharoah-Necoh. Jehoiakim did not learn from this, and he chose to do evil in his own right (cf. 2 Kings 23:37). He, for a time, subjugated himself to Nebuchadnezzar but turned and rebelled against him (cf. 2 Kings 24:1). Nebuchadnezzar was not the only problem for Jehoiakim. Due to his rebellion, Chaldeans, Assyrians, Ammonites, and Moabites all came after him, and God said it would happen.  Jehoiakim chose this, God allowed the Punishment The sin of Judah was nothing new. It was an ongoing practice that was carried out by the king and his people. God was true to His Word, and, despite the warnin...

Abijah and Totality

Now in the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam the son of Nebat reigned Abijam (also Abijah) over Judah.Three years reigned he in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Maachah, the daughter of Abishalom. And he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father. 1 Kings 15:1-3        Do you ever wonder how someone who gets things mostly right can still be so wrong? It is mind-boggling if we do not consider that God judges man in totality. From our text above, it is hard to see anything good that can be said about Abijam (Abijah) son of Rehoboam. After all, it is evident that he walked in all the sins of his father, which he had done before him: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father.      So where do we learn the details? 2 Chronicles 13:1-22 gives us further evidence of Abijah’s issues. We know he i...
