Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly,
nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But
his delight is in the law of the Lord; and
in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a
tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his
season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Psalm
1:1-3
When
you seek advice, to whom do you go? Perhaps it is a parent, a friend, or the
mature in age. To whomever you go, you certainly want someone who is wise,
experienced, and, most of all, Godly. When we share the same values with a
counselor, we are truly seeking the best advice.
In
the world, there are many people that would seek to give the Christian advice:
from the religious to the irreligious. Both are ungodly for they do not share
the same goals as the Christian. If we make a regular practice of walking in
lockstep with the ungodly, standing in the ways of sinners, and sitting in the
seat of the scornful, we can never be blessed. These practices are of a carnal
nature, purposed on the pleasure of man. Brethren, do not be mistaken, I am not
suggesting that we do not have any contact with the worldly. The Scripture
clearly teaches that we cannot avoid all that indulge in sin for we would have
to leave the world (cf. 1 Cor 5:9-12). This is a far cry from making them our
trusted source for news, advice, or guidance in our lives.
If
we refuse to walk, stand, or sit with the evil men in their evil ways, the Holy
Spirit says we will be blessed. He declares that the characteristics of such is
one who delights in the law of the Lord. He meditates on it day and night. I
cannot emphasize just how important daily Bible study is for you. We find solid
advice from those who are in the Word, and thus, we must ourselves be in the
Word. Delighting in the Word is not just having good thoughts about it. It is
trusting that it is the authoritative guide that God has given to us for
blessed living. The Word also comes with the promise of security. The man who
refuses to be tied to the wicked and who trusts and obeys the Lord is a man who
is immovable from the grace that Jesus freely gives.
Who
do you trust when you need counsel. What is their guide in the advice. Where
will they lead you to? The Godly counselor will always lead you to the Lord. It
is written, For to us a child is born, to
us a son is given; and the government will be upon his shoulder, and his name
is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
Grace and Peace,
Ryan
