Addition, Subtraction, Expedience

The Bible is the Word of God. It is the only approved standard by which men must live to be right in the eyes of God. We must treat the Word of God with the utmost respect, not because it is just another book, nor is it merely words printed on the page with a human origin. The Bible is authored by the Holy Spirit of God, and we must listen to what He has said concerning His Word. We must be careful first and foremost never to add nor take away from God’s Word.   A Command Under Moses A command was given to the Jewish nation in the law of Moses first. “Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish from it, that ye may keep the commandments of Jehovah your God which I command you” (Deut. 4:2). God delivered this Law on Sinai as the only approved standard by which Israel would live. It was the supreme law of the land and any question or dispute that needed to be resolved began and ended with the Law of Jehovah. A Command Broken Under M

How Do I Know If I Am Right with God?

How do I know if I am right with God? The question is simple, but it requires us to put some effort into figuring out an answer.  Since this takes effort, many people will ask the question and never look for the answer. This is an extremely dangerous way to live as you may be blissfully ignorant, but being blissfully ignorant of God’s word can lead to terrible eternal consequences. So, let’s answer the question in short. How do we know if we are right with God? To answer this we should ask ourselves some simple questions. Have You Heard?              The first step in the process is hearing the word of God. I know this seems like taking a step back from answering our serious question, but we have to address the fact that we need to hear God’s word. Logically speaking it all starts here, but as we move forward we need to continue to hear God’s word.           Romans 10:17 (KJV) says, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” The way that you get faith

At the Feet of Jesus

How amazing it must have been to sit at the feet of Jesus. Have you thought much about that? What would it have been like to be around the Master? It was obviously life altering for His disciples, the majority of which (by historical accounts) would go on to violent deaths. Christians would go on to be persecuted throughout the centuries. Why? Jesus is worth the shame (Acts 5:41). Jesus is worth it all, because “there is no other name, under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). It is for this very reason we think about how amazing it would have been to personally sit at the feet of Jesus. To Talk to Him Must Have Been Tender           Talking to Jesus must have been so tender. We know that He would tell people what they needed to hear, and sometimes that was rather forthright (see Matt. 23), but he was loving and compassionate to those who wanted to learn from Him. Remember when parents were bringing their children to Jesus so that He could lay His ha

Why Should I Attend Bible Study?

“Give diligence to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, handling aright the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15            There is a Bible study that happens every week, twice a week. These studies are held in a location you frequent. It is comprised of your family and your brothers and sisters in Christ. The Bible is the textbook, and it is supported by book, chapter, and verse. It sounds like something that all Christians would seek to be present for. It is our weekly Bible studies at 9:45 AM and Wednesdays at 7:00 PM. If this sounds so good, why do our attendance numbers for the hour of worship differ from our Bible Study times? Why do we attend Bible study anyway?   Christians Study the Bible  We are commanded to study the Bible. Paul wrote,  “Till I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching.” 1 Tim 4:13. When we meet together for Bible study it provides a great supplement to your study. Yes, it is supplemental, because the New T

Is Your Name in the Bible?

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.  John 3:16  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned. Mark 16:16  The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness; but is longsuffering to you-ward, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.  2 Peter 3:9   But God commendeth his own love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8  When we seek to interpret the Bible, we look at the text and ask several questions; first, is there a specific command in the Scripture regarding this subject? If there is not, we might look to approved examples where a certain question might be answered by the presence of an example that corresponds with the whole of Scripture. Lastly, we find there are certain times where a specific command and/or example are missing. In this
