How to Answer False Claims Regarding the Role of Women in the church

Occasionally when I preach or teach regarding Ephesians 5:21-33 and 1 Corinthians 14:34-35, I get questions about other passages. My commitment as a Christian is to provide Bible answers to Bible questions. This surely includes questions concerning the role of women. In light of the subject material we are going to cover in both the morning and evening sermons, let us examine some commonly misapplied passages that are often used to get around direct commands given by the Holy Spirit. But Phoebe was a deaconess           Some have suggested that Phoebe, a sister in Cenchreae, served as a deaconess in the New Testament church. This is not the case. Why would someone suggest this? Romans 16:1-2 reads, “I commend unto you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church that is at Cenchrea: that ye receive her in the Lord, worthily of the saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever matter she may have need of you: for she herself also hath been a helper of many, an

How to Study a Book of the Bible

Where do you begin when starting a study of any book of the Bible? The average person is just going to jump right into the text of that book and start looking at it verse by verse. Maybe you grab a trusted commentary and start reading through the text. Another option might be to find someone who has recorded a class about that book (why not glean from someone else’s teaching). You might even read the book through a few times before really studying. Obviously, there are several ways that a person could begin a study, and you can’t really be dogmatic about how to begin a study. We all learn in different ways, but I would like to share with you another way. How to Read a Book           Years ago a friend introduced me to a book. It was written by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren and the title was simply, “How to Read a Book: The Classic Guide to Intelligent Reading.” How to read a book? Really?! Aren’t you supposed to just pick it up and start reading? Well, there are som

Blessings and Curses Are Both Conditional

As we near the end of our study of the book of Leviticus in our Sunday morning class, I found myself wondering what more is there to say concerning this book. As I studied the penultimate chapter, I read this. “But if ye will not hearken unto me, and will not do all these commandments; and if ye shall reject my statutes, and if your soul abhor mine ordinances, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but break my covenant;” (Leviticus 26:14-15). This is a warning that immediately follows the conditional blessings of keeping the Law, and proceeds the conditional curses of not keeping the Law.  After these two verses, the Lord lays down the explanation of what terrors will follow Israel if they will not keep the law. God would not allow for them to go unwarned because He wanted to bless them. Let's explore the initial warnings given and make an application for our life under the law of Christ.  You Will Not Hearken       Jehovah’s first warning was to avoid not

Sing Our Commitment

When we worship by singing (Ephesians 5:19) we are also teaching each other (Colossians 3:16). By engaging in this act of worship, we are singing our commitment. Our commitment to God, to the church, and to the work. Why do we sing? Because we love the Lord and we are committed to the thing we sing. In recent weeks we have dwelt on being happy, the perfect law of the Lord, and trusting God to make things beautiful in His time. So how can we commit further? Let’s consider a few songs that we sing.  More About Jesus  “More about Jesus would I know, More of His Grace to others show, More of His saving fullness see, More of His love who died for me.” Singing more about Jesus is an amazing song. The words are rich with reminders of how our songs, sermons, prayers, and lives could benefit from more Jesus. Can we have too much Jesus? I know I cannot. John wrote about how great Jesus was. Many other signs, therefore, did Jesus in the presence of the disciples, which are not writt

Sing and be at Peace

We sing when we are happy. We sing the truth. Can we sing and be at peace? When we consider when we are happy, yes we can sing and be at peace with contentment in Christ. If we sing in truth, we certainly receive peace with God and enjoy His righteousness. It begins to be more difficult when we are melancholy. There will be times when we are sad. A lost loved one. A broken relationship. Sin and the lasting consequences of sin can break our hearts, and stifle our desire to sing. I am reminded of a Psalm written in Babylon when the children of the southern kingdom were taken into captivity because of their sin. “By the rivers of Babylon, There we sat down, yea, we wept, When we remembered Zion. Upon the willows in the midst thereof we hanged up our harps. For there they that led us captive required of us songs, And they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How shall we sing Jehovah’s song in a foreign land” (Psalm 137:1-3)?           Can you

His Servant and Yours

I don’t know who said it first. All that I do know is that I did not come up with it. Sometime within the past couple of years I was listening to a preacher who commented that someone he knew concluded his letters with the phrase, “His servant and yours,”. As soon as I heard that I knew that’s the way I wanted to end my correspondence. The phrase denotes two things in particular. First, it indicates that we are in service to the Master. Second, it shows the need to follow our Lord in service to others as well (John 13; Luke 10:29ff). What does serving the Lord and serving others look like? How to Serve Your Master When someone is in charge of your wellbeing, you tend to do what you can to ensure their happiness with your performance. At work you look to your boss. At school you follow your teacher’s guidelines. In life you should obey the law. As a Christian how do we make God happy? We please Him by serving Him. Consider two options. You can marry someone who loves you and would do an
